And what kind of results you get?
Take this quick networking quiz to see how strong your networking game is.
Professional Networking Quiz: How Good Are You at Networking?
Answer each of the following with a simple YES or NO.
Do you have a steady stream of the right opportunities coming your way?
Do your trusted friends, family, and colleagues know exactly what you're looking for in your next career move?
Do you know who to reach out to beyond your existing network?
Are you able to communicate what you want clearly and concisely?
Do your conversations help you answer key questions, connect you to other resources, and reveal opportunities you hadn't considered?
Are you having repeat conversations (versus mostly one-and-done)?
Do you look forward to these conversations and walk away feeling energized and supported?
Do you feel like you can pick up the phone and get the career support you need whenever and whatever is going on?
How'd you do?
If you got 8 out of 8 yeses, congratulations! And also, let me know if you'd like to co-lead my course. :)
If you got fewer than 8, no worries. Most people score low.
Because we’ve been taught to do networking all wrong.
I'll confess, up until a few years ago, I’d have scored 2 or 3 out of 8. I was a RUBBISH networker.
I hate small talk. I have social anxiety. As an INTJ, I’d rather sit in silence than have a boring, surface-level conversation. Can we just get to the good part already?!
I found networking to be superficial, transactional, and exhausting.
This is embarrassing—when I left corporate, I remember thinking, "I'll never have to network again." 😂🤷♀️
Clearly, I was very wrong about that one. And clearly, I needed to find a better way to talk to people.
Because I promised myself that I'd only do things in my business that were fully authentic and aligned.
It forced me to find a way into building relationships that worked for me—and to help others do the same.
These days, I actually look forward to these conversations instead of dreading them. I’m much more thoughtful about who I talk to and what I say.
I’m surrounded by a super-supportive network of people I love and respect.
And the best of all? I don’t even realize I’m networking most of the time; I’m just talking to cool people about cool things. It’s fun and easy.
Here's the bottom line: not only is networking the BEST WAY to get the best career opportunities the fastest, it can also be really darn enjoyable.
